Katie Couric hosts celebrity panel on Binge Eating Disorder and Food Addiction

I guess we have to count on alternative news outlets to get the best information on Binge Eating Disorder out to the public these days. Katie Couric hosts a panel on food addiction with tennis champion Monica Seles, interventionist Brad Lamm and Yahoo Finance Markets Correspondent Nicole Sinclair. The video was hosted and created by Yahoo Finance.

Kudos to Yahoo for tackling this important topic called: America’s Hidden Epidemic: Food Addiction. It was one of the most insightful, and in our view honest and realistic views of binge eating disorder and food addiction ever presented by the mainstream media.

I was so impressed with Monica Seles and her honesty around this still stigmatized disease.

She even talks about how hard it was to go public at first. Her courage will be an inspiration to an entire generation of young people now faced with Binge Eating and Food Addiction.

Katie brings up the fact B.E.D is now recognized in the DSM 5, the newest version of the bible of psychological disorders. Brad Lamm of Breathe Life Healing Centers in Los Angeles, Ca also notes that because of that designation folks can now look to their insurance to cover treatment for binge eating. This is a huge step for folks struggling with B.E.D nationwide.

Brad also, albeit gently, tackles the idea of “throwing amphetamines at eating disorders” – great line Brad! He talks honestly about his own mother’s struggle with speed many years ago and even his own addiction to amphetamines in an attempt to regulate his food. He identifies as a person in long term recovery from food addiction and says that finding a “baseline” without speed type drugs is the way he handles folks at his treatment center. An approach we agree with.

He says that the conversation about amphetamine type medications to treat B.E.D. it is changing today and we are talking about it differently. He notes that there is an “urgency” in the healthcare world about the issue because of the obesity crisis.

ABC News Correspondent Mara Schiavocampo also shared her story on her struggle with B.E.D. before losing 90 pounds. The honesty of these high profile celebs adds everyday to the de-stigmatization of B.E.D.

Just a great overall look at Binge Eating Disorder and the issues that surround it today. Enjoy!
